On Saturday we reported on the Grand Prix of Shanghai – Race 5 of the 2018 XCAT World Championship.

Pål-Virik Nilsen and Jan Trygve Braaten driving The Blue Roo, finished second at the XCAT Shanghai Grand Prix today, only to be told after the race that the winners on the water, Rashed Al-Tayer and Majed Al-Mansoori in Team Abu Dhabi 5 had taken a 30 seconds penalty for destroying a buoy.

However, on Sunday morning the XCAT organisers posted:

UPDATE of Saturday’s race 1 results, as issued on Sunday at 11:01am
After re-examining all the images and the timing logs, and taking into consideration protests and appeals, the UIM and the Race Officers have issued the amended race results. Here below the official final results of Race 1, while the arrival order (boat numbers) is the following: 5 – 8 – 4 – 20 – 46 – 96 – 17 – 10 – 2 – 9 – 3.

After further investigation today, I have learned the reason why Abu Dhabi 5 were reinstated as winners of the race.

The XCAT timing system failed during the Saturday race.

When the results were initially posted, they added the 30 second penalty on and guessed that would demote Rashed Al-Tayer and Majed Al-Mansoori  to 4th place.

The organising team then took another look at the race video later that day and worked out that with the long laps that Abu Dhabi 5 had covered, it had enough of a lead to swallow the time penalty and therefore keep their win.
