The much-anticipated UIM F4 European Championship round scheduled for May 1–4 in Augustow, Poland, has been officially cancelled. A disappointing blow to the international powerboat racing community, the event was expected to feature an impressive lineup of over 25 boats from across Europe—stretching from Italy in the south to Finland and Latvia in the north.
The stage was set for a spectacular season opener. Finnish drivers, long regarded as podium regulars in F4, were joined by rising talents like Latvia’s Slakteris and Norwegian rookie Martinsen. French veteran Jean-Baptiste Thomas was also tipped as a strong contender for the top step of the podium.
But excitement turned to frustration when organizers, citing financial issues, announced the late cancellation. For many teams, it was too late to recoup costs.
UIM F4 Race Director Jeni Jelf expressed deep disappointment, acknowledging the significant logistical and financial preparations made by the 25 participating teams.

“We understand that the organizers can’t race without a budget, but the organizers also have to understand that we are now stuck with four non-refundable tickets, two ferry bookings, and a loss of more than €2,000—and that’s just for one team,” said Martinsen. “Some teams are in the same position, some worse. I would estimate that the total loss among drivers is between €40,000 and €50,000.”
The cancellation has left many drivers and teams questioning whether the UIM should implement a penalty or compensation system to protect competitors when events fall through at the last minute. As Martinsen notes, “We have commitments to sponsors. We’ve been funded for three rounds, and we expect to race three rounds.”
With such significant investment already made, the priority now is finding a replacement venue for the Polish round. Martinsen is clear: “With or without prize and travel money, it’s more important to get a good replacement race. I hope UIM is working on it already”
The big question remains: who will step up to take on the challenge of organizing a new event at this stage of the season? The logistical and financial burden is significant, but the urgency is growing.
For the future of the sport, and the integrity of the championship, teams and fans alike are hoping for a solution—and soon.
