Fistral fires off UK ThunderCat season

John Moore on 12th April 2017

Newquay will host the opening rounds of this year’s ThunderCat Powerboat Racing Championship.

The free to view event will see some of the most exciting powerboat racing take place on Fistral beach between Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April 2017, with practice taking place on Friday 21st.

ThunderCat Racing is a one of the world’s most exhilarating water sports.

The primary purpose of a ThunderCat is surf racing and they race at high speeds in surf of up to 5 metres and wind speeds up to 45 knots. Crews consist of a driver and a co-driver. The driver drives from the rear of the ThunderCat, while the co-driver uses his weight to adjust the trim of the boat. Surf racing usually takes place as close to the shoreline as possible, ensuring an amazing spectacle for those on the shore, and fabulous racing for drive and co-drivers.

Fistral Beach will be hosting 18 teams who will be take part in up to 12 racing heats with a final 9 lap show down!

You can expect the 4m inflatable boats to be hitting the white crests and reach heights of 20+ ft in the air… a spectacle you will not see anywhere else on the UK shorelines.

Race director Fiona Pascoe said;

Everyone is so excited to be going back to Newquay.
We are super excited as it will be our first event teaming up with Atlantic Freestyle Football open, who will provide great entertainment as well as the chance for the public to participate on a purpose laid pitch… so you can even get involved and put your skills to the test!

Official practice will commence from 11.30 on Friday and racing starts from midday on Saturday the 22nd and Sunday 23rd April.
