John Moore on 7th October 2017

Offshore Raceboat builder Gordon Wright has passed away.

Wright enjoyed a successful collaboration with Naval Architect, and Designer, Lorne Campbell through the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s.

Skean Dhu, an AEM (Air Entrapment Monohull) was built by Wright out of wood to a Campbell design in 1976.

Driven by The Countess of Arran in the Offshore Class 3D class, she took the Class II World Speed Record at 93.8 mph in 1979 and in 1980 the outright World Offshore Powerboat speed record at 102.45 mph using twin Mercury 225 outboards.

Wright / Campbell boats dominated the Offshore 3C and 3D classes in the 1980’s, taking World Championships and countless race wins.

Wright is survived by his wife Pam and son Chris.
