Great Expectations

Chris Davies on 15th February 2022

Both Brock and Damon Cohen of Cohen Brothers Racing have great expectations for the upcoming 2022 AFPGP Series.

The Australian Formula Powerboat Grand Prix Series starts this weekend on February 19 & 20 with the opening round being hosted in the border town of Albury on Lake Hume which is approximately six hours south of Sydney.

Cohen Bros Racing are a two-boat team who use Mercury 200hp 2.5L Carburetted engines as their power of choice.

The class in which they compete in, Formula GP, runs with identical rules to the one’s used in the USA’s NGKF1 Series with the F2 Optimax, Merc 2.5 Carburettor, SST120 and V6 OMC Carburettor all in the one race.

Brock had this to say to Powerboat Racing World

During the break we have been working extremely hard. I believe we are the hardest working team on the grid which is why we have big expectations for this year. With big expectations naturally comes immense pressure. We are our own biggest critics and have had some positives the last couple seasons of racing but also some negatives, however, this year I feel will be a good one for us.

Younger brother Damon not only pilots the teams BABA hull but is also the engine builder and head mechanic.

There should be fifteen boats at this race. It’s not the biggest field of boats we have had but the quality of the entries is extremely high with some of the best teams and drivers in the country competing in Round One. I am confident we will be competitive but first and foremost I am hoping we have a smooth and trouble-free weekend.

Brock won the inaugural Formula GP final back in 2020 in his newly imported DAC with Tim Seebold present at the event overlooking Australia’s adaption to Seebold’s similarly run series rules. Unfortunately, the Coivd-19 pandemic put a halt to the remainder of the series. This year will hopefully be the first non-disrupted season for the AFPGP Series since 2019 with three rounds currently confirmed and a fourth to be announced.
