Have Victory Team turned the corner?

John Moore on 6th December 2018

Victory Team’s Ahmed Al-Hameli clocked the fastest lap of 43.93 sec in the extra free practice session held in Abu Dhabi today.

The 90-minute session didn’t include Team Abu Dhabi’s trio of Shaun Torrente, Erik Stark and Thani Al-Qemzi who decided that they had enough testing laps under their belts and would save their machinery for tomorrow’s BRM F1 qualifying.

However, Al-Hameli’s quickest time was significant, it may herald an upturn in fortunes for the Dubai based team who have struggled in this year’s F1H2o World Championship.

Proving that Al-Hameli’s (above) time was no fluke, four-time World Champion and team-mate Alex Carella posted the second fastest time of the session with a 43.68 sec.

Philippe Chiappe set pole in Abu Dhabi this time last year with a 42.83 sec lap and in 2016 Jonas Andersson’s 44.60 seconds was good enough to head the grid.

In late November PRW reported that Team Abu Dhabi’s Erik Stark had set an unofficial Abu Dhabi lap record in testing, whilst its highly unlikely that Al-Hameli and Carella will get amongst Stark, Torrente and Al-Qemzi tomorrow, surely they should be a good bet to get into the top 6?
