Tony Blom-Pettersen on 15th October 2022

Thani Al Qemzi’s sub 30 second lap gave him pole position for tomorrow’s UIM F1H20 Grand Prix of Regione Sardegna during a revised qualifying procedure.

With a shorter course put into place it was decided to split the boats into two groups.

Both groups ran 20-minutes each to determine the fastest six boats that would go through to the final 15 minute session.

Q1 Group 1A

Group 1A consisted of Alberto Comparato, Philippe Chiappe, Bartek Marszałek, Filip Roms, Sami Seliö, Marit Strømøy, Alec Weckström and Ferdinand Zandbergen.

Zandbergen spun-out during the session causing a yellow flag, however, the Dutch driver kept his BaBa hull up the right way although he took no further part in the session.

Comparato was quickest with a 30.56, slower than his 30 seconds dead in First Free Practice this morning.

Seliö was .20 down on the Italian with Weckström .24 slower.

Q1 Group 1B

Group 1B consisted of Jonas Andersson, Duarte Benavente, Alexandre Bourgeot, Cedric Deguisne, Shaun Torrente, Thani Al Qemzi and Kalle Viippo.

Al Qemzi, Andersson, and Torrente set the fastest times knocking out Strømøy, Zandbergen and Chiappe from the final top six.

Q3

The fifteen minute session saw a little bit of history made when Thani Al Qemzi posted a 29.92 – The first driver to set a sub 30 second lap time in modern F1 powerboat racing history.

That wonder lap was to go unbeaten and give the driver from the UAE pole position.
