Powerboat P1, the international marine motorsport promoter, has announced changes to its executive management team that see Thomas Covington heading up P1 Offshore. This new role will involve him taking charge of all P1 powerboat racing in the United States.  

 

Speaking from the company’s headquarters in London, Powerboat P1 Chairman Asif Rangoonwala explained that his aim is to strengthen the P1 USA operation now that P1 Chief Executive Azam Rangoonwala is based in the company’s new office in Dubai. The senior management team includes Martin Raby, International Operations Director, and Michelle Petro as P1 USA Director of Operations, both of whom continue in their current roles.

 

Following his motocross racing career, Florida-based Covington joined P1 in October 2020 to focus on delivering the company’s existing commercial agreements and securing new sponsors and partners. Most notably, he negotiated a significant sponsorship deal with Monster Energy, with the drinks brand becoming title sponsor of the St. Petersburg Powerboat Racing Grand Prix, the Class 1 world championship and the Super Cat M CON Racing Team. After taking up the position of Commercial Director in January this year, Covington’s role developed to also include the televising of P1’s powerboat and jet ski racing events, marketing, hospitality, fan experience and social media. Prior to this season’s race program, he secured a live television agreement with MAVTV featuring the high-profile Class 1 race series.

 

Covington said he was excited to be taking up his new role as the company finalizes its 2025 business plan: “Powerboat P1 has been at the forefront of international marine motorsport for more than two decades, staging more than 750 races in 19 countries on 4 continents, and it will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in this dynamic sport. Partnerships have always been at the heart of our business and enhancing our key relationships with venues and racers will be a priority for me. Working with the P1 board and management team, I will drive innovation and commit to ensuring that our business growth aligns with the company’s passion for excellence and championing the sport we all love.”

 

Azam Rangoonwala took up his CEO role in 2018 under the chairmanship of his father, Asif who founded the company in 2002, and he has been responsible for developing and establishing the P1 Offshore brand and Class 1 championship as leaders in offshore racing in the United States.

 

“Our new presence here in the Middle East will enable us to identify and explore new opportunities within the UAE and neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar,” he explained. “Having embarked on our third decade as a leading promoter, Dubai will become a key regional hub for expansion and, at the same time, I will be actively supporting Thomas in our primary market in the US.”

 

Asif Rangoonwala commented: “Thomas has made a significant and sustained contribution to our P1 business over the past 4 years. His considerable experience in being involved with world class motor racing series, together with accomplishments in key sectors such as operational management, television, sponsorship and partnership development, make him ideally placed to lead our management team into a new era for the P1 Offshore and P1 AquaX brands. This appointment comes at a time of change for both the world of marine motorsport and our own company, and together we will focus on the core business, Florida race events and business development opportunities to realise P1 USA’s commercial and sporting potential.” One of Covington’s principal jobs next month will be to finalize and announce the 2025 race calendars for P1’s powerboat and jet ski race series.

Powerboat P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala was presented with a giant birthday cake yesterday on the opening day of the Monster Energy P1 Offshore St. Petersburg Powerboat Grand Prix to mark P1’s 20th anniversary.

 

It all began in an Italian resort town on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was May 2003 and the very first Powerboat P1 Grand Prix of the Sea launched a new era of marine motorsport. Since then, P1 has staged more than 700 powerboat and jet ski races in 19 countries on 4 continents, and who knows when and where the 1,000th race will take place.

 

The two decades of high-speed, sporting action has been very much a father and son story. Azam explained: “My father, Asif had a vision, which is sometimes described as the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom, and it was underpinned by passion and energy to build a successful and enduring business in pursuit of a market opportunity. The next twenty years are now in my hands!” 

 

It was a double celebration in St. Pete, with P1 AquaX reaching the milestone of ten years of jet ski racing in the United States.

  • 39th annual event to feature two days of world class powerboat racing along Lido Beach

The countdown is underway to the 39th annual P1 Offshore Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix on the weekend of June 30-July 2 when residents and visitors can enjoy world class marine motorsport action along Lido Beach. Presented by Visit Sarasota County and again produced by Powerboat P1, the free to watch event will attract more than sixty powerboat racing teams from Europe, Australia, Canada and the United States.

The event will kick off at 6.00pm on Friday evening with a pit party featuring live music from Andy Velo, live remote radio broadcast, food trucks and local vendors. There will also be the opportunity to meet the race teams and view the boats up-close. Racing on the 6-mile course at Lido Beach will begin at 1.00pm on Saturday, with the qualifying session for the exhilarating Class 1 powerboats at 2.00pm, and on Sunday the action will get underway at 10.00am with the fleet of Class 1 boats on the water at 1.00pm. VIP hospitality tickets offering superb viewing from the beach front hospitality tent on both race days are available from the P1 Offshore website

Over race weekends, we monitor marine animal activity in the race area with observers on boats, on the land and in a helicopter reporting any sightings such as dolphins, manatees and turtles, and they have the authority to stop the racing if necessary.”

Sarasota is the second longest-running powerboat grand prix in the United States and for decades the racing has been a unique, prestigious summer event that brings significant value to the community. It generates millions of dollars in economic impact every year with up to 16,000 room nights, and the national and international television coverage showcases the city’s many attractions to an audience of around 230 million homes.

Leading insurance company unveils plans for 2023 powerboat racing season in partnership with P1 Offshore and Class 1

International marine motorsport promoter Powerboat P1 and leading insurance broker XINSURANCE have jointly announced plans for the second year of their three-year partnership. Established more than 40 years ago in Sandy, Utah and regarded as an industry innovator offering customized speciality liability insurance for businesses and individuals, XINSURANCE is an Official Partner of Powerboat P1 and UIM Class 1 offshore racing.

 

An exciting element of the sponsorship is that Powerboat P1 is able to use the primary seat in the A-Star XINSURANCE helicopter, designated the Official Broadcast Helicopter, for filming and live streaming at offshore races across the 2023 season. The two partners will cross-promote on all social and digital platforms, and the sponsorship provides XINSURANCE with significant branding and activation opportunities at race events together with significant exposure through Bally Sports and CBS Sports Network television broadcasts.

The XINSURANCE name is familiar to powerboat racing fans with the company’s name featuring prominently on the side of the 48-foot MTI purpose-built Class 1 boat raced by Alex Pratt and Miles Jennings that also carries the Good Boy Vodka brand name. In March this year, XINSURANCE expanded its company-sponsored offshore racing fleet by announcing that it will be backing the Turk Family Racing team’s two bracket class boats, and last month it unveiled a long-term title sponsorship of the Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City.
