George along with teammate Ian Blacker received the double in the Concourse De Elegance Trophies for the Junior and Sports boat classes, respectively. Concourse De Elegance is a term of French origin that means a “competition of elegance” and refers to an event where prestigious vehicles are displayed and judged. Both drivers were awarded their respective trophies for ensuring their boats, themselves, their equipment, and the team are always well presented at races and events.

 

Another award for the Team saw Ben Jelf Awarded Mechanic of the Year. Ben a formidable driver himself had taken a break from racing whilst he finished his mechanic qualifications and became an MOT Tester for the family garage. He spent the season crewing for all three of the team drivers both nationally and internationally and attended Coniston Records Week to assist one of his peers Jonny Brewer in achieving his British and World Powerboat Record dreams as well as aiding other teams and drivers throughout the season.

Powerboat GP has been the official promoter for the last 7 racing seasons and was set-up by Jason Brewer.

After financial difficulties, Brewer handed the running of Powerboat GP over to Luke Jones who wrote today’s statement.

Powerboat GP were keen to be involved in the formation of a new National Governing Body following the the Royal Yachting Association’s decision that they will no longer act as the national authority for powerboat racing in the UK after this season.

However, the majority of British circuit clubs made it known that they did not want the promoter involved in the process.

Please be advised that following several club cancellations of Circuit British Championship Rounds, the PBRC have authorised the re-allocation of the event dates to ensure that competitors have plenty of opportunity to compete for their respective British National Championship titles as well as support other events such as Club Racing or testing.

This is an extremely unusual situation but following consultation with the valid – pre entered class competitors that pledged entry for the whole season, we are confident that the 2018 calendar now offers something for everyone.

The new calendar takes into account that both the Lowestoft & Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club (L&OBMBC) and the Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club (LPRC) have recently cancelled their National Championship events.

The L&OBMBC gave this as a reason on their Facebook page recently:

Due to a lack of pre-entries and escalating cost of ambulances and associated costs.

There was no mention of the UK Circuit promoter, Powerboat GP in today’s bulletin, although Stewartby Powerboat Club was thanked for ‘facilitating the championship rounds’.

MAIB summarises the incident:

Boat 43 flipped over and its driver, unable to free himself from its flooded cockpit, lost consciousness and stopped breathing.
The driver was released from the cockpit within about 5 minutes and was revived by the medical team on board one of the race circuit’s safety boats. He was taken to hospital for treatment and subsequently made a full recovery.

The striking thing about the report is that the drivers are left unnamed and are simply referred to as ‘Boat 43’ and ‘Boat 22’.

Boat 43’s driver’s emergency air supply cylinder was not charged to its full design pressure.
Had it been, he might have escaped or been rescued before he lost consciousness.

A structural failure to Boat 22’s port hull probably caused it to turn into the path of Boat 43.
