Perez hits the water

Winner of this year’s Monaco GP, F1 driver Sergio Perez will be entering a team in the new all-electric boat racing series next year.

The Mexican who drives for Oracle Red Bull Racing said:

I’m really excited at the prospect of becoming a new team owner in E1 and having a team representing Mexico in the UIM E1 World Championship.

Perez is a friend of E1 co-founder Alejandro Agag, who he raced under with the Barwa Addax GP2 team in 2010.

Given my relationship with Alejandro, I’ve kept a close eye on what he’s been doing and his various championships, and I think what he’s achieved with promoting more sustainable forms of motorsport is commendable.

Seeing a racing team flying the flag for Mexico on a global stage will be amazing and I cannot wait to watch the RaceBird in action for the first time.

I’ve heard lots of positive stories about the boat and the exciting sporting product E1 is trying to create for fans with city events.

For sure this will be a great challenge in my career and a learning experience.
I’m looking forward to getting started and helping to grow the fan base in Mexico and around the world.

Is Scism Electric

US Offshore World Champion Taylor Scism, daughter of MTI’s founder Randy Scism, could be all set to become one of the first drivers to sign up for the E1 World Electric Race Boat Series according to the Marine Technology Inc. website.

The E1 World Electric Race Boat Series is searching for participants for its debut racing season, and Taylor Scism is being considered as a driver for their debut 2023 season.

Taylor is the daughter of the MTI founder Randy Scism, who has had a long association with powerboat racing. He made his racing debut back in 1985 before joining the Victory Team as General Manager. His association with the Victory Team lasted over ten years, winning his first race in 1992.

In 1994 he lifted the Pole Position Title and five years later won the UIM Class 1 World, European and Pole Position Championships alongside Ali Nasser. During his extensive career at Victory, he won ten Grand Prix, eight pole position wins and finished on the podium twenty-one times.

In 1999 Randy left the Victory Team to set up Marine Technology Inc. That company has now built raceboats and pleasure craft that have gone on to win design awards for excellence, National titles in America and the APBA World Championship. His daughter drove an MTI 390X last year with John Tomlinson in the new Factory 450 Class and are already planning their second season together in 2022.

Scism, who also heads up MTI’s client relations staff is naturally excited by the prospect of the electric boat race. E1’s scouts including British Offshore Champion Shelley Jory–Leigh, have been in talks with her for several months and are recruiting participants across a wide variety of sports.

It’s a really interesting project as they are looking for female competitors from a variety of sports. One is a show jumper, while another is a skier. Some haven’t even sat in a boat before. They plan to put us through safety training, driving school, simulator training, and then flight school where we’ll have the chance to get in and drive the RaceBirds.

The E1 series will see twelve teams competing in global race locations behind the wheel of the RaceBird boats designed by SeaBird Technologies and Victory Marine and powered by Kreisel Electric who will supply the battery for each electric RaceBird competing in the series. Each team will consist of a male and female member in the single-seater craft.

The E1 Series was launched in 2020 by Alejandro Agag and Rodi Basso. Agag, a ground-breaking pioneer of sustainable motorsports, has created three electric racing series from scratch: Formula E, Extreme E and now the E1 Series.

Scism, who is only one of two women being considered from the USA, confirmed that it’s not a done deal yet.

We probably won’t know until late Autumn, maybe even early winter, if we’re officially going to be selected as drivers. But they’re extremely excited to have the women involved and are going to be doing workshops where aspiring younger participants will be interacting with seasoned female racers.

Kreisel Electric batteries to power E1 Series RaceBirds

The E1 Series and Kreisel Electric are joining forces to bring the world’s first electric powerboat championship to the water.

Kreisel Electric will supply the battery for each electric RaceBird powerboat competing in the E1 Series, set to begin in early 2023.

Using innovative hydrofoil technology, the electric RaceBird powerboats will rise above the water’s surface, allowing for minimum drag and maximum energy efficiency. With a peak power of 150 kW and 35 kWh battery capacity, Kreisel’s bespoke solution for the RaceBirds will enable them to achieve fast acceleration and longer range between charges.

E1 Series receives new backing and boat design

Electric Sea Racing Limited and the Public Investment Fund have entered into a partnership that will see PIF support in creating the world’s first electric powerboat racing championship.

The news was revealed today during a virtual launch event, where E1 Series organisers also unveiled the new design of the electric RaceBird powerboat.

The partnership represents a significant step forward in the long-term development of the championship, providing a strong foundation on which to build from and enabling the series to further accelerate preparations for the inaugural season, scheduled to take place in early 2023 – with Saudi Arabia to be one of the considered race locations.

HE Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of the Public Investment Fund, said:

This exciting investment in a new premier sport format aligns with our strategy to enable innovation globally and unlock new industries, as well as build strategic partnerships with real value add to Saudi Arabia.

We believe our support for future sports will also contribute to the growth of various sectors globally.

Series creators Alejandro Agag, Chairman of E1, and Rodi Basso, CEO of E1, were both joined live in the studio by the President of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) Raffaele Chiulli, as well as SeaBird Technologies Founder Sophi Horne, and Founder & CEO of Victory Marine Brunello Acampora to present the RaceBird powerboat.

The new powerboat that Sophi and Brunello designed looks like a spaceship. I’ve compared electric racing cars to podracers from Star Wars in the past, but the RaceBird looks even more futuristic. Working together with PIF, I look forward to ushering in a new era of electric powerboat racing.

The next major milestone in the RaceBird development is in September when the covers come off the first full-scale model at the Monaco Yacht Show, before the start of prototype testing which is set to get underway later this year.
