Sure, it was disappointing to see only one team wearing racing overalls standing on the podium come Sunday evening but the other two teams in the Sport Class certainly felt frustrated that they were not required to put them back on for the second heat.

For Christian Cesati and Matteo Berardi the conditions in the first heat had taken their toll on their Albatro 32R hull leaving them with a two-metre delaminated horizontal chine halfway along the hull. With back-to-back heats the Italian team had no time to fix the issue and had little choice then to accept the three hundred points for their second place in the first heat.

Cesati said

Maybe I hit something because the hull started to act strangely, in fact I became incredibly nervous, so I decided to back off and settle for second place. When we saw the problem, we knew it was not going to be a two-minute repair.

For Alain Coppens and Joeri Vanlaere it was a weekend of firsts, although they won’t be in a hurry to repeat it as they were black flagged after just four laps of the first heat. Unbeknown to the Belgium crew their Mercury 400 ROS had lost its engine cover and the race officials were concerned that had the engine ingested any water then a potential seizure could have caused the RiB to flip. How close the team were to the seventy per cent rule affording them 225 points for a third-place finish is now up for debate.

One result that needed no discussion was that of Nico Bertels and Francis Notschaele who claimed maximum points for two first place finishes. They had a great battle with Cesati and Berardi who outran them in the initial stages but eventually they caught and passed the Italians. Once that battle was over, they set about maintaining a comfortable gap till the chequered flag.

Bertels told PRW that he was happy with the result

It was good that it was rough enough to test the balance of the boat but not rough enough to break it. Two races in those conditions were tough and I feel sorry for the other teams who had problems that could have been resolved if we had raced twenty-four hours apart. Going out there in the second heat just looking to finish began to play on my mind. I spent lap after lap listening to the engine note rather than racing flat out.

For Notschaele it was a great feeling to be back in improved FTX 27 that last year they won the title in.

The second heat was strange as we had nine laps to complete to consolidate the weekend. We just respected the material and maximum points was the result.

The second round of the UIM World Championship will see the class leading teams back on their home waters with a race weekend in Ostend, Belgium over the weekend of 25/26 June.

Having two heats around a course that was far from flat was always going to be tough on both the crews and machinery and by the end of the day there were broken boats up and down the pit lane. Those who could master survival would leave Spain with a bag of points towards their championship title hopes.

The largest class competing here this weekend was the Boat Production one, with Buby Bertels and Nico De Stoop looking like pre-event favourites to regain their world title. They had been eager to get going ever since Friday morning and when the green flag was raised from the start boat for heat one, they quickly sped off into the distance. Two laps later though the race was red flagged, and the teams were motoring their way back to the marina, all except Valentino Basile and his new navigator Fabrizio Dal Pazzolo.

The Italians had taken an extremely hard hit in their Ocke Mannerfelt B23 after flying over two waves they completely stuffed the hull into a third. Fortunately, neither of them was hurt in the impact and the Spanish Rescue Teams were very quickly on the scene taking the hull under tow and plucking the crew from the sea.

Safely back ashore Basile spoke to PRW about the incident.

We were pushing hard for second place, which was always the plan. So, we moved to the inside line at the start of the breakwater and felt the boat fly a little bit further than expected and the next second we are completely under water. Maybe we need to look at the balance of the boat before the next round.

The OOD then decided that even though they were about to start the third lap he wanted to start the heat again. The Kuwait Team of Bader Aldousari and Mohammed Alessaei had been struggling up until the red flag with an oil pressure alarm going off every lap. So, when all the teams headed back in the marina, their Kuwaiti mechanics quickly topped up their Mercury 250 engine with oil and sent them back out to race. It didn’t last long though as the alarm went off again forcing them to retire with oil leaking from the crankcase.

When the green flag was raised for a second time Hagen Jerzynski and Stef Scheepers quickly took the lead in their Graünner Stilette 27. They had seen during the previous start that the pace had been a lot slower than usual when the green flag was waved, so this time they knew what to expect. Their day would eventually come to a grinding halt after a bracket on their Mercury 200 engine broke and punched a hole in the oil pan, leaving them to be towed back in on the very last lap. A six-thousand-kilometre round trip with no championship points was a bitter pill to swallow.

Scheepers said

Sure, we are incredibly happy with the boat set up, especially since we have only had the hull for two months, but our chances of a World Championship have taken a punch on the nose.

Bertels and De Stoop would take the chequered flag followed by another Bernico FTX 27 driven by Jan-Cees Korteland and his brother Paul.

Jan-Cees Korteland said

We didn’t have enough fuel in the boat which meant we had to back off and not pressure the leaders. So, when you then racing that’s when mistakes happen, and we nearly submerged the hull in the turn past the breakwater. Fortunately for us only the rubber rail around the hull came loose as it could have been a lot worse.

The Puma Racing Team of Xavier Derille and Jeroen Haverbeke in their eight-metre rib crossed the line in third place even though they had broken the bracket of their trim pump.

Derille said

Everyone has broken something this weekend.

After a two-hour break it was time to go out again for heat two but by then the field had lost three competitors. During the lunch break, the Bernico Factory Team had fitted a new Mercury 300 R engine to one of their customers raceboats, the Belgium team of Reginald Goelen and Jochen Revis who had not even managed to complete one lap in heat one. Before they had reached the muster area after a reconnaissance lap two top bolts had snapped off in the Mercury mid-section breaking the drive shaft, leaving them stranded on the course.

Now with a fresh engine they left everyone else behind as the green flag was once again raised. The Korteland brothers gave chase but even they had to settle for second place once again. A cylinder issue with their Mercury engine meant Bertels and De Stoop were limited to just 50 mph and decided at that point that survival and getting the boat home in one piece was now the priority.

With a total of 625 points, they still claimed the top step of the podium in what became a Bernico benefit with two other FTX 27 teams standing either side of them.

It’s been a great weekend; we could not have asked for a better start to the season. As a company owner it’s really important for us to take the top three position here although I will have to start being careful as they are starting to catch up with me.

Although driving to the conditions might have been an option, the race organisers felt that the heavy sea swells would comprise any rescue attempt made by the safety crews if an incident occurred.

Two competitors did venture out to test the conditions, but they were not outside the marina wall for long before heading back ashore.

Xavier Derille and Jeroen Haverbeke from the Puma Racing Team went out but only did one lap of the course in their eight metre RiB.

The GPS failed to work so we have no real idea of the speed we reached but it felt like forty Kmph. We had put thirty kg’s in the nose but that wasn’t enough, but we couldn’t put any more in because there isn’t enough room.

The schedule for Sunday has been adapted to allow the race organisers the opportunity of holding a race either side of lunch. A forty-five-minute Free Practice will start at 09:30. Heat One will start at 11:00 and will consist of ten laps of the course. Then the eleven lap second heat will get underway at 14:00 followed by the prize giving at 17:00.

The original layout of the Ocke Mannerfelt design Batboat had a tandem seating arrangement but after several months of arduous work back in Como the team have now adapted it to a parallel formation.

This afternoon Basile told PRW some of the reasons behind the switch.

In adjusting the seating, we have also been able to make many improvements with the aerodynamics which has also improved the balance of the boat, plus it’s a lot lighter now.

Basile is a relative newcomer to racing boats but has always been involved in high level sports. At the age of six he started to race MotoX but a bad accident shortly after his eighteenth birthday meant his riding days were over.

Having grown up beside Lake Como he had often seen powerboat in action, so it wasn’t long before he started asking about getting into racing one.

One day I met a person who explained to me all about the sport and gave me a boat to try out and I was hooked.

That was three years ago and since then the Italian has tried racing in the Offshore 3D class at a race in Como. When he raced bikes, he would also fix them. Now he’s racing boats he also fixes them.

It’s my passion to fix modify and improve engines and boats. You learn a great deal when you prepare the boats you race.

Along with a new seat layout Basile also has a new Navigator, his long-time friend Fabrizio Dal Pozzolo, who he has known for over fifteen years. They struck up a friendship over their shared passion for flying microlights which he does to relax.

We have been flying them since we were sixteen. I went to aviation school to become a pilot, but I moved into real estate instead.

Dal Pozzolo comes with a competitive background having rallied a Renault Clio in the Italian Rally Championship for the last two years. He also tried his hand with bikes competing in the Enduro Championship and then in the Ducati Series.

From his time in a rally car, he is more used to having someone sat alongside him and feels more comfortable with being able to see Basile rather than just hearing him on the intercom. What did surprise him though was the acceleration through the water compared to a pleasure boat which was his only experience on water before teaming up with his friend.

Basile also shares that passion for speed across the water.
